Final Random Inspection Quality Procedures

Overview

Final Random Inspection (FRI) in the garment industry is the last,  critical quality check conducted when 80-100% of the consignment is packed,  ensuring finished goods meet specifications before shipment.  Using AQL sampling plans  (usually ISO 2859-1),  inspectors check for defects in workmanship,  measurements, packing, labeling, and functionality & the lot is packed into shipping cartons.

Key Procedure of Final Random Inspection

  

Preparation & Sampling: The factory provides the packing list and, ideally, 100% of the goods. The inspector randomly selects cartons based on AQL levels (e.g., Level II, 2.5/4.0) to ensure a representative sample across sizes/colors.

· Random Selection: Cartons are randomly picked from the entire shipment across all size and colour ratios. Individual garment samples are then drawn from these selected cartons.

· Necessary Documentation: The inspector requires the approved master sample, technical pack (spec sheet), trim card, and purchase order (PO), test reports for comparison.


Physical & Functional Inspection

Packaging/Labeling:  Checking for correct carton markings, poly bag safety, hangtags, barcodes, and assortment.

Appearance/Workmanship:  Visual inspection for stitching defects (broken/open stitches), cleanliness (stains), and fabric faults.

Dimensions/Measurements:  Checking garments against the provided spec sheet to ensure they are within tolerance.

Barcode Scannability:  Barcodes on both retail polybags and shipping cartons are scanned to ensure they link to the correct SKU.

On-site Tests:  Conducting tests such as pull tests for buttons/zippers, stretching tests, and light-box checks for color matching.

Safety Checks:  All garments must pass through needle detection to ensure no broken metal fragments remain.

Smell and Spotting:  Garments are checked for chemical odors, moisture (mold risk), or oil/ink stains that must be removed via "spotting".

Defect Classification:  Defects are classified as Critical (safety issues), Major (not acceptable, affects salability), or Minor (slight, acceptable in low quantities).

Final Result & Reporting:  Based on AQL, the lot is accepted, rejected, or pending. A detailed report with photos is provided. If passed, the cartons are sealed.

Common Inspected Areas

1. Workmanship:  

  • Stitching & Seams: Inspection focuses on stitch density, thread type, seam allowance, and the absence of broken or skipped stitches.
  • Fabric Care & Handling: Ensuring no damage occurs during handling, such as fabric burns, staining, or shading variations.
  • Attachment Security: Ensuring buttons, zippers, labels, and trim are securely attached, functional, and properly aligned.
  • Finishing: The final appearance, including proper pressing to prevent scorch marks or unwanted creases.


Common Defects in Workmanship

  • Seam Puckering: Uneven fabric feeding causing bunched seams.
  • Broken/Skipped Stitches: Weak or missed stitching that compromises structural integrity.
  • Misalignment: Improperly matched patterns, checks, or misaligned pockets and buttonholes.
  • Measurement Issues: Deviations from the specified size chart (out of tolerance).
  • Trimming Issues: Excessive or loose thread ends not properly removed. 



2. Measurements: 

 Garment industry measurements ensure consistent sizing, quality control, and proper fit through precise, standardized procedures. Key measurements (often 1/2 chest, 1/2 waist, hip, length, shoulder, sleeve) are taken on finished products using a "points of measure" (POM) sheet, distinguishing between body measurements and, crucial for manufacturers, final garment dimensions including ease and style tolerances.  


 Key Measurement Points (Garment/Finished Specs)

  • High Point Shoulder (HPS): The highest point of the shoulder, where the seam meets the neckline; the anchor for many vertical measurements.
  • Chest/Bust Width: Measured horizontally 1 inch below the armhole or armhole seam to armhole seam.
  • Waist Width: Measured horizontally at the narrowest part of the garment (or specific distance from HPS).
  • Hip/Seat Width: Measured horizontally at the widest part of the lower garment.
  • Front Length/Body Length: Taken from the HPS straight down to the bottom edge of the garment.
  • Sleeve Length: Measured from the shoulder point to the sleeve opening, or from the center back for long sleeves.
  • Bottom Sweep/Opening: Measured horizontally across the bottom hem.
  • Armhole: Measured in a straight line or curve from the bottom of the armhole to the shoulder seam. 


 Important Industry Guidelines

  • Garment Position: Measure items lying flat, smoothed out, but not stretched unless measuring elastic items.
  • Point of Measure (POM): Always use a documented measurement sheet for consistency.
  • Tolerances: The allowed difference between the spec sheet and the actual garment (e.g., inch).
  • Tools: Use a non-stretchable measuring tape or metal ruler.
  • Sequence: Generally measure from top down (collar, shoulder, chest, waist, hips, hem) to ensure efficiency. 


 Difference Between Body and Garment Measurements

  • Body Measurements: Actual body dimensions (closer fit).
  • Garment Measurements: Finished garment dimensions, which include "ease" (additional room for movement).



3. Appearance: 

 Appearance in the garment industry refers to the overall aesthetic, structural integrity, and visual quality of a finished clothing item. It encompasses key factors like proper fit, drape, 3D shape, and absence of defects, with assessments conducted on seam quality, color consistency, and durability after washing. 


 Key Components of Garment Appearance

  • Fabric & Materials: Base fabric quality determines the overall look, including luster and surface texture.
  • Seam Quality: Crucial, as defects like seam pucker or twisted seams directly impact the silhouette.
  • Dimensional Stability: Maintenance of shape after laundering, avoiding shrinkage or spiralling.
  • Trims & Accessories: Buttons, zippers, and labels must be secure, properly attached, and aesthetically consistent with the design.
  • Finishing: Final ironing, pressing, and cleaning (thread removal) to remove unwanted wrinkles.

 Key Factors Affecting Appearance

  • Fit & Draping: Garments should hang comfortably from the shoulder without staining or gaping.
  • Workmanship: Surface appearance check for manufacturing defects, color shading, and consistency across production lots.
  • Post-Washing Performance: Evaluation of appearance after washing, looking for pilling, fraying, or loss of shape. 


4. Packing/Labelling: 

 Garment packing and labelling in the apparel industry are critical final production steps, ensuring products are protected, identified, and compliant with international standards while promoting brand identity. Key aspects include care/fiber content labels, size tags, and branding, alongside protective polybags, hangtags, and durable, eco-friendly cartons. 


 Garment Labelling EssentialsLabels are required for identification, consumer safety, and legal compliance (e.g., Textile Fiber Products Identification Act). 

 

  • Main Label: Features the brand name or logo.
  • Size Label: Indicates sizing (S, M, L, XL).
  • Care Label: Provides instructions for washing, drying, and ironing to maintain quality.
  • Content Label: Lists fiber composition (e.g., 100% Cotton).
  • Country of Origin: Required by law in many countries.
  • Specialty Labels: Included for price, batch identification, or safety (e.g., flammability warnings).


 Garment Packing Methods:

Packaging protects garments during transport and aids in marketing and inventory management. 

 

  • Polybags: Individual bags to protect from dust and moisture.
  • Folded/Flat Packing: Garments are neatly folded, often with tissue paper to prevent wrinkling.
  • Hanger Packing: Garments are shipped on hangers, common for delicate items like dresses or suits.
  • Deadman Pack: A specific, cost-effective folding technique for shirts, where sleeves are folded in front and pinned.
  • Outer Packing: Cartons or corrugated boxes (often with plastic linings) used for final shipping.


 Key Requirements & Regulations

  • Compliance: Care labels must be permanent and legible.
  • Language: Labels must be in English or the local language of the target market.
  • Safety: Children’s wear often requires "Keep Away from Fire" labels in specific fonts.
